Once upon a time, there was a little white church in the woods in northern Minnesota. It was called Bethlehem Lutheran Church, and it was listed in the National Register of Historic Places because it was such a typical little white church in the woods. There are lots of people buried in the cemetary behind the church, and they have names like “Mattson” and “Lindberg” and “Carlson” and “Peterson.” It should come as no surprise that this church was founded by Swedish settlers to those woods in Northern Minnesota.
Many years after the church was founded - 29 years ago, in fact - a young girl and her family moved to the town near the church. The girl met another little girl in preschool, and the two of them became fast friends. As they grew up, they began spending the night at each others’ house. When this girl stayed at that girl’s house on Saturday nights, they often went to the little white church in the woods on Sunday mornings. That girl, and her father, and (I think) her father’s mother were all baptized in that little white church in the woods.
Many years later, that girl met a boy and got married. She wanted to get married in her little white church, but it was too difficult to do so. Her husband helped her find a little white church in the town where they did get married, and it was beautiful. But still, it wasn’t THAT little white church. More years passed, and the boy and that girl had a baby boy. That girl and her husband decided that he should be baptized in the little white church in the woods. And THIS girl was that little boy’s godmother.
Happy Christening, Alex. I love you.

Maggie loves to investigate outside, as most dogs do. She sticks her nose into all sorts of things she shouldn’t stick it into, she runs around and barks when she gets a good whiff of some critter or another, and she’ll roll in anything that’s even remotely smelly. In short, she’s a Dog.
Last Thursday night, however, she outdid even herself. For a photo essay of her adventures around Amy’s compost bin, start here and keep clicking the “next” button. If you want the quick and dirty of what she did, just head over to this .avi movie (uses Windows Media Player). Since I’m a total digital-video dork, the video is huge and I have no idea how to compress it. Probably best for high-speed connections only.
In case you’re wondering, no, she did not catch it, and it was a young bunny rabbit.

So I’ve neither upgraded to SP2 nor fully figured out how to upgrade my blogging software. Oh well, nothing’s been lost, and I’ve backed up my hard drive. That’s a good thing. I also realized that my hard drive is nearly full (hence not upgrading to SP2). That means that I’ve spent more time cleaning up the hard drive - defragging it and deleting old programs I’ll never use. Sigh.
The semester has started at work, and once again I’m reminded of how much I love my job. This week I taught four library classes, hiked through the Crum Creek for my orienteering class, and watched the women’s soccer team play a couple of games. On Monday I’m going to my first-ever field hockey match. I like being active on campus, being known. Suits my temperment.
And with that, I’m off to bed for the night. There is a furry little beast curled up on the sofa next to me, with one eye open, peering at me as if to say, “Turn that blasted thing off and come to bed like a normal dog!” I keep reminding her that I’m human and not dog, but she forgets. Her idea is a good one though, so good night.
Maggie sometimes sleeps on her back, too.
