Confidence

Last year I started playing ice hockey with a really fun team, the Philadelphia Freeze.  I was on the lowest-level team, the “independent” (i.e. developmental) team.  About half the team were newcomers like me, and the other half had been playing between 1-5 years.  Amy played on the D-level team (and a few times in previous years had played up on the C-level team when they needed bodies.)

Anyhow, this is all by way of saying that I’m still pretty new to the game and have a LOT to learn.  Immediately I knew I wanted to play defense - it’s one of those things I just know about myself.  I’m a good defender, I’m a good harmonizer, if I were in a rock band, I’d play the bass.  In short, I’m never going to be the flashy goal-scoring winger, or the lead singer, but I pride myself on providing the solid backdrop against which others can shine.

Last year, I had quite possibly the world’s best defensive partner - for me.  Jill is a love, despite her bark.  I adore Jill, and miss her more than you can imagine.  Jill has played for a while, and really loves to play with the developmental team.  She isn’t the fastest person on the team, but she sees the rink - the whole rink - and talks a lot.  When I learn new things, I tend to focus in on the minute details, and lose sight of the big picture.  Playing with Jill - I was never going to be allowed to do that.  Every time I’d get caught up in something she’d be yelling at me, getting me out of the “head-down” thing, and helping me stay away from some really bad habits that I saw other women on the team doing.

Fast-forward to this year.  Amy and I started on a new team, a team with only a couple of defenders.  We both play defense (although she’s played wing before, and loved it too).  So the first few games the coach partnered us together back on defense.  And that was okay.  We had fun, played pretty well together, etc.

But a couple of games ago, Amy got a fast-break out of the zone and it was pretty obvious that her skills in that area were going to take her out of the defensive realm pretty quickly.  I had a moment of nervousness - I’d only really played in the back with Jill and Amy before, and wasn’t sure how things would go with a new partner.

So the past couple of games I’ve played in the back, on the left (I’m the only left-handed defensive player on the team now), with a couple of different partners.  And you know what?  I’m doing really well back there.  In talking after yesterday’s game with LisaO (a center and one of the wise woman of the team), we both noted that it’s as though I’ve finally given myself permission to start making my own decisions on defense, rather than deferring to my more experienced partners.  Playing with Jill and Amy was vital for me as a complete newbie - I like having people who are more experienced than me around when I’m learning something.  But now that I’ve gotten the hang of things, more or less, I need to go out and make my own decisions, to be the one talking to and with my partner and setting some direction in back.  I’m not perfect - oh my god - far from it!  But I’m getting better at seeing things, keeping my head up, stopping people and forcing them away from the net.
And damn, but that feels good. Confidence.  I like it.

Egads!

Has it really been almost a month since my last post? My apologies. Life’s been plugging along quite nicely, although as per usual this past year, it’s been busy!

Cabled Hat

I finished both the wristlets and the hat. Love them. Wear them almost every day, even though it’s not quite winter weather yet. I am a dork, I know it. But I really like them.

I started a sweater - for me! It’s Janda from an older issue of Knitty. I got the yarn (Peruvian Highland Wool) a couple of years ago from Elann.com, and thought it felt like the right time to jump in. So far I’ve finished the back and have begun the front. I think sleeve island is going to be a lot longer than normal on this one, since the sleeves are raglan. But so far it’s a pretty easy, mindless knit, and I like that. The body is the lighter color, and the sleeves are the darker. I’m using a light tan/off-white for the racing stripes up the sleeves.

My folks came to visit Amy and me at our new house. We had a very nice time - ate a few great meals (Chiara, Oga’s, Union Oyster House), toured campus, drug them to our hockey game (we won!), and watched a bit of baseball in the down times. Just lovely. Can’t wait to see them again at Thanksgiving.Work has been really interesting lately. We’re down a couple of people in my department, which always makes things interesting. Plus there are some interesting division-wide conversations happening that excite me, and that have the potential to make my job a lot more interesting. The decision to come here? Get a thumbs-up. (Although I still my my friends in Philly and at Swat.)

I’m quite sad that I’m missing this year’s Internet Librarian conference. The blog posts I’m reading have me green with envy. Maybe next year (along with ALA Midwinter and Annual, ACRL, and whatever other cool, fun, relevant conferences I can rustle up.)

Things that have caught my eye for one reason or another lately:

That’s all for now. Happy Halloween!

Updates, list-style

  1. Knitting: I’ve been doing some. Made some wristlets for my office from yarn I bought at MDSW 2005. Based it on the Fetching pattern from the summer 2006 Knitty. I brought the cables all the way up the back and did just a plain bind-off. I really like how they look, but should have made them about 1 repeat longer arm-wise, and about 1 repeat longer finger-wise (after the thumb gusset). Still, I wear them all the time at work (my office is really cold). I’m making a matching hat with the cables going all the way up the top. Getting close to where I need to start the crown decreases, but the math of how to do decreases across 11 sets of 2 facing cables…! Makes my brain hurt a ltitle. I’m sure I’ll figure it out eventually. Things I’ve learned while knitting all this: how to pick up a dropped stitch, how to fix a mis-directed cable, and how to switch a knit stitch to a purl stitch several rows later (related to the dropped stitch thing). Can you believe I’ve been knitting for 4 years and have never dropped a stitch until now? I’m a little too … SOMETHING or other with my knitting.

  2. Geocaching: Haven’t been doing any lately, but Amy + I did take a class at REI the other day called Introduction to GPS. Oh my - waypoints and GoTos! Holy crapoly! I need to buy a cable for my unit quick so I can start using the GPS the way it’s supposed to be used, rather than the haphazard way we’ve been using it so far.
  3. Work: Have started advertising for 2 librarians at my library. Interested? The semester hasn’t been too crazy yet. All of us in the group are waiting for the other shoe to drop. I think it’ll happen in mid-October when all the writing classes want instruction sessions.
  4. Hockey: Amy + I found a team here - the Black Ice - and have been playing with them for about a month. We’re 1-3 so far, but I anticipate that we’re going to start winning games soon. The team is great - mostly soccer moms from the suburbs, and a few soccer moms from the city. I’m highly amused by this, as the makeup of my last team was NOTHING like that. If you’re interested in seeing us play sometime, drop me a line and I’ll send you our schedule.
  5. Newsworthy: I’m completely disgusted by the recent Congressional action re: torture/habaeus corpus/the slippery slope towards gutting the Constitution. I’m supporting Deval Patrick for governor here in MA. If you live in PA (Delaware County area) you should consider supporting Bryan Lentz for a House seat. Ask Daddy Democrat why.
  6. Completely Random: I just started using Google Reader as my newsreader and am loving it! Buh-bye Bloglines! I’ll be using you only for your email function any longer. From now on, I’m a GReader gal.

That’s all.

P.S. Maggie (the dog) is insanely cute sometimes. This morning she managed to do this:
