This week I sent the following letter to four friends:
As part of a year-long celebration leading up to my birthday next May, I’ve put together a list of 40 things I want to do during this, my 40th year. One of those things is to send $20 to four people, ask them to spend it on anything they want, and to write back to me letting me know how they spent it. You might be surmising – correctly – that you are one of those four.
How did I choose YOU? Well, I know 4 people named XXXXX for whom I have current (I HOPE) addresses. I know you all from different times/eras of my life (early 90s Minneapolis, mid 90s Syracuse, early 00s Philadelphia, late 00s Boston) and none of you know each other, although I know for a fact that two of you were in the same place at the same time a few years ago. Besides your common name, you also are all the sorts of folks who will get a total kick out of this and won’t leave me hanging.
So here you go! Twenty bucks, a pre-addressed, pre-stamped postcard, and nothing for you to do but to spend the money and let me know how you spent it. My only request is that you spend and send in the next 10 days.
Enjoy, and thanks for participating in my celebration!

I’ll post photos when I get postcards back!
